Apple said it would cost $999 to fix a MacBook Pro. An independent repair store did it for $325. WSJ’s Joanna Stern went on a journey to repair two water-damaged laptops and show how new legislation could provide more options for fixing our broken gadgets.

    Personal Technology With Joanna Stern
Technology is overwhelming and making decisions about what gadget to buy is harder than ever. WSJ personal tech columnist Joanna Stern makes it all a bit easier in her lively and informative videos.

Can you imagine if a car company worked like this? Oh, I see you have a front flat tire. We are going to have to replace the entire front differential and all 4 tires cause we feel that's the best way to fix this issue!!!

If apple does not want their devices being repaired by others to protect their property rights at least they lower their repair cost coz their ripping off a lot of people. They want monopoly and they are also greedy one day this company will go down when people stop patronizing their products.

The only thing would be risked is their profit 🦆. They can not let that happen. Screw people over, screw the environment over, there are dollars at stake for above mediocre performing products, for which the raw materials had been mined by child laborers, assembled by underpaid laborers in China in inhumane working conditions, and designed by engineers who solder the SSD on a motherboard which has only 4GB RAM installed.

Hypocrisy: Apple claims they use 100% recycled aluminium which is true, but this metal is hoarded by disingenuously curbing repairability and encouraging unnecessary replacement. Making you buy their new product when you are totally fine for another 2-3 years if you could get your old device repaired. They increase the frequency of your consumption. It’s total bull whenever Apple utters the word “green”,”net-zero”……. Buy a good product, use it for as long as possible. Also, go nuclear.

So you want used components with unknown history and remaining life… microsoldered by hand… then complain about Apple’s price for motherboard replacement? Not an Apple fan but quit with the effing legislation! Gov is not the answer to everything. Just don’t buy Apple, and educate people about the same. Individuals and companies should have their privacy and the right to do what they choose. So long as the individual or company is not a gov backed oligopoly like utilities.

Anyone with basic electronic knowledge would know that replacing individual parts is probabilistically more reliable than replacing the entire thing, depending on the level of damage. I know swapping out an IC given it's the only part damaged, would have greater chance of success than having an entire motherboard that could be defective from the factory. Cause it does happen. All of their so called "efforts on environmental awareness" are meaningless the moment they charge so much for a simple repair, that adding $200-$300 more would get you an entirely new device.

Read me. There's going to be mistakes here but bear with me and if I am incorrect, please do correct me. I won't take it the wrong way if done tactfully. I felt this needed to be jotted down. Data compromise by independent repair shops ( I believe that was a point of contest) wouldn't be a concern for right to repair antagonists, if the data was in a removable format. You know. M.2 or SSDs that AREN'T SOLDERED PERMANENTLY TO THE BOARD IN WHICH A AVERAGE END USER CANNOT TAMPER WITH WHETHER DUE TO LACK OF TOOLS, KNOWLEDGE WHAT HAVE YOU. Before the customer leaves, there could be maybe a cable that disconnects you hand the customer their data drive in a protective case or sleeve. When did removable storage suddenly fall out of fashion and into a safety/negligible performance enhancing area? The repair company uses their own "test drive" to check if software and hardware works as it should. Customer comes back, their data drive plugged in/SIM card connected/eSIM reactivated again. Repair complete, pay in full or however it is negotiated. Business continues as usual. We've seen hundreds of fresh OS installs to see if things are running properly. I dare to ask why are these folks who are in positions of power not educated. Why do we have people who they themselves are not subject matter experts to put their hands in matters such as these? How is it they have the audacity, the sheer magnitudinal confidence to impair the effort make a necessary right to repair your OWN DEVICE, not a LEASE OR LOAN OF PROPERTY as smooth as possible? Not wanting to be rude but it seems these "points" they bring up as to why "they're" (more like just Apple themselves/Apple influence/Apple bribery/Apple ecosystem) against the right to repair movement seem uninformed and uncaring because they can afford throw money like water on concrete, have no attachment to the things they paid for, it's incredible for such a lack of awareness of what's going on for those in positions unlike themselves and the monetary social bracket those people belong to. There's a need for reliability, affordability and accessibility, why is this so difficult to accept as well as provide? You're there for the people. Not for a business or company.

If you buy the Apple products by spending fortune feels like you not own them you rent them because you don’t have any control on your device until apple allows you to. iCloud is not made for people safety its made for apple to control all there devices that seating in your hands and in your pocket. By doing automatic update if apple want they can shut your device down anytime. So in short you pay all that money for not to own the apple devices but only renting this devices. This has to be stopped.

If you are wondering why the media has taken up this issue now when they could have done years ago, it's because the corporates fund the media enterprises and in return media does not criticise them in public. The moment the funding stops, criticism finds a place in their coverage. The reason why the capitalists fund the Left leaning media quite often than not.
